FAMILY FORMATION AND PARENTAL RIGHTS

​American Unity Fund is advancing the dreams of millions of gay and lesbian couples to live their American Dream by building families. In the realms of assisted family formation, parental and adoption rights for same-sex married couples, and supporting healthy family formation to combat our country’s fertility crisis, we are uniquely situated to build alliances and advance the aspirations of families across our nation and in every state.

 

We thank President Trump for his Executive Orders to preserve and make more affordable the IVF technology that has given so many American couples their greatest wish, and are working to advance this IVF expansion through political, legal and legislative action. 

 

As our country faces a growing fertility crisis and so many couples struggle to build the families they dream of, our work is not just to advance the aspirations of gay and lesbian couples — but of our entire nation!

 

A GENERATIONAL THREAT: MASS-ONSET YOUTH GENDER DYSPHORIA

For 12+ years, American Unity Fund (AUF) has worked to great success to win the freedom to marry and civil rights for gay and transgender adults in employment, housing and essential services, sometimes also known as public accommodations. 

 

In 2025, in response to a growing wave of American youth struggling with gender dysphoria, we are shifting to respond to this growing crisis exacerbated by the pandemic and rampant social media addiction. 

 

At AUF: We believe kids struggling with gender dysphoria should be given the best mental health care possible and wait until adulthood to make decisions about potential medical choices.

HERE IS WHY:

• Some American children struggling with gender dysphoria are pushed into medical procedures and harmed in the name of “LGBT Inclusion,” and as gay and transgender adults it is incumbent on us to raise our voices in defense of our community and our youth. We sympathize with parents, who aren’t medical experts, and who sometimes feel politically or socially pressured to seek these medical procedures by providers who are working with outdated or politicized standards of care.

• While some states and the Trump Administration have attempted to ban certain medical treatments for gender-dysphoric youth, this creates a patchwork of laws and policies that ultimately will not succeed. Parents, kids, and families in all fifty states need better answers. We should look to how countries like the UK and Sweden are pivoting away from the so-called “gender-affirming model” and provide evidence-based medical care and especially positive mental health care and therapy to these kids as they develop.

• American children are genuinely suffering from gender dysphoria along with other issues such as autism, eating disorders, bullying, and many other challenges that developing teenagers face, especially during puberty. We need to identify real facts and real medical expertise, free of politics, to support these kids whose clinical needs are far more complicated than the political extremes are willing to admit.

• Identity politics and an anti-science zeal have taken over factions of the American Left and are being weaponized to silence gay and transgender people and others who disagree with medicalizing children. This extremism endangers decades of progress and jeopardizes the essential civil rights protections we have won for gay and transgender people. 

• The recent election proves that the overwhelming majority of Americans, including millions of gay and transgender Americans, are demanding a change of course and a balanced and fair approach to protecting transgender people, gay people, women, and people of faith, consistent with AUF’s decade-long campaign for Fairness for All.

 

Bottom line: AUF’s campaign for Fairness for All continues and includes respect for all Americans regardless of sex or religion. We will continue to develop and advocate for balanced policy solutions that promote respect, dignity, and liberty for all.
